Hyundai has launched a new brand dedicated to EVs.
Ioniq – taking the name from Hyundai’s existing electrified lower-medium car - will debut in 2021 with the Ioniq 5, a mid-sized SUV based on the concept EV 45 that Hyundai revealed last year.
The Ioniq 6 saloon, based on the Prophecy concept from earlier this year, will then follow in 2022, and the Ioniq 7 large SUV will arrive in 2024.
Hyundai says Ioniq vehicles will be based on an Electric Global Modular Platform, which it claims will enable fast charging capability and plentiful driving range.
It says vehicle interiors will feature highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity, and also gloveboxes designed as drawers.
Hyundai says the launch of the Ioniq brand is part of its aim to sell one million battery EVs by 2025, and become the world’s third-largest maker of eco-friendly vehicles.
