Mercedes has confirmed that the next-generation S-class luxury saloon will come to the UK with both hybrid and plug-in electric variants.

“Hybrid is still in the plan for the new S-class coming in 2012 and our engineers have told us that right-hand drive is in the portfolio for hybrid,” Mercedes UK boss Wilfred Steffan told BusinessCar. Steffan added that other hybrids would follow in the model’s replacement cycles where opportunities exist.

There will also be a plug-in electric hybrid S-class, currently set to arrive with an emissions of 74g/km that, crucially, would halve the car’s BIK band to 5% until April 2015, which would be a huge saving on such an expensive car. The plug-in version will have a pure-electric range of around 18 miles on top of the petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

Steffan also confirmed that the next A- and B-class models should offer sub-100g/km variants.
