The Fleet Safety Forum has launched a new campaign to stamp out employees driving while tired.

The Wake Up campaign is calling on employers to do more to manage drivers’ schedules and health to prevent tiredness. Research by FSF co-ordinator Brake found 10% of at-work drivers admit to having fallen asleep at the wheel, compared with 5% of those who don’t drive for work, while 50% of at-work drivers admit to getting in the car after less than five hours’ sleep, compared to 35% who don’t drive for work.

“Driver tiredness is a deadly and major killer that can creep up on a company with no warning, particularly during times when business is tough, unless commonsense risk management practices are applied,” said Fleet Safety Forum manager Roz Cummings.

The charity has produced a free information pack for fleet managers and their drivers to identify the signs of tiredness and prevent it happening in the first place.
