Halfords is for the first time able to check and replace the batteries in cars fitted with stop/start systems after upgrading its diagnostic equipment and introducing new replacement batteries designed to cope with the extra strain of stop/start technology.

Halfords’ head of trading, Dave Poulter, claimed the company is the first national retailer to sell and fit the Yuasa batteries costing £175-£200, although fast-fit giant Kwik-Fit said it is also able to offer the AGM batteries designed specifically for stop/start vehicles.

“Our research places us at anywhere between 20-40% cheaper than a main dealer,” said Poulter.
