The recession is emphasising the problems caused by employees using their own cars for company business, according to fleet management company CFC Solutions.

“Thanks to the credit crunch, many employees are being tempted more than ever to let maintenance standards slip,” said Neville Briggs, CFC’s managing director. He claims the company has been hearing of more drivers that are choosing to delay sorting issues such as booking services or replacing worn tyres.

“Not only does it mean that employees are placing themselves and other road users in potential danger, but the new Corporate Manslaughter Act means that this situation could hit a company and its managers very hard indeed,” continued Briggs.

He advises putting rules in place regarding the running of a grey fleet, and then making sure they are adhered to in a way so that can be audited by the Health and Safety Executive in the case of an accident.
