Business car users are expected to benefit particularly from fewer motorway accident delays following the Government’s £2.7 million initiative to use 3D laser scanning technology to cut the time taken clearing up after crashes.
Some 27 police forces across England have been have been granted the funding for 37 scanner,s which should reduce the £1 billion annual cost of post accident congestion delays caused by motorway closures. More accurate and efficient scanning of accident scenes will save time and reduce the overall economic impact.
The Department for Transport-backed scheme aims to reduce road clearance times by an average of 39 minutes. In 2010 the English motorway system suffered 18,000 complete or partial motorway closures lasting an accumulated 20,000 hours.
