Frankfurt has kicked off with a bang with the drapes pulled off an all-new almost production-ready X6.
Based heavily on the big 4×4 X5 underpinnings, the new BMW concept bravely introduces svelte coupe lines to the off-road class and, according to the German firm, will introduce the finest drive too.
Thanks to super clever 4×4 hardware and the addition of ‘Dynamic Performance Control’, the X6 is able to shuffle torque not only between front and rear axles but side to side too, ensuring power is always transferred to the road as efficiently as possible when exiting a bend or pulling away.
If that wasn’t enough to wow the crowds, BMW went one further by introducing a revolutionary new hybrid system that’s primed to hit a showroom near you.
Dubbed ‘Active Hybrid’, the green drivetrain made its global debut in the shiny new X6 and claims to shave fuel consumption by as much as 20% compared to the conventional car.
Possessing both electric and petrol powerplants, the two electric motors kick in when pulling away to assist the conventional engine, but where the system differs from other more conventional hybrids is the electric motors kick in again at cruising speed, enabling owners to benefit from superior fuel consumption, not only in the city, but out on the open road too. Expect the system to have no problem slipping comfortably under the proposed 225g/km limit for the maximum £25 congestion charge.
