Ford is introducing a camera to its S-Max and Galaxy models that can see around corners when drivers cannot, to avert accidents.
Known as the Ford Split Camera, it displays a 180-degree view from the front of the car using a camera in the grille, which allows the motorist to spot approaching vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists.
The camera is activated at the touch of a button and displays the view on the car’s eight-inch touchscreen. Drivers can track road users that approach on either side of the road and pass in the vehicle.
The camera is kept clear by a specially designed retractable jet-washer that operates automatically when the windscreen wipers are activated.
“From sunrise to sunset we tested the Front Split View Camera on all kinds of roads, congested urban streets and areas with a lot of cyclists and pedestrians,” said Ronny Hause, engineer, driver assistance electronic systems at Ford. “Tackling tunnels, narrow alleys and garages in all light conditions also meant we could ensure the technology worked well even when sunlight was shining directly into the camera.”
