Fleet new car registrations were just 2.0% down on October 2008 last month, the closest the market has yet been this year to matching the comparable month of last year.

The year-to-date figure for the first 10 months of 2009 is sitting at 23.4% down for fleet, compared with the 12.3% down figure for the overall market including retail sales. In October, the retail sector was 78.1% up as it continued to reap the benefits of the scrappage scheme.

Ford still leads the way in the fleet sector, though its 13,515 registrations were only 164 units ahead of Vauxhall, while Peugeot had a good month to push back ahead of Audi and BMW.

Vauxhall’s Astra grabbed the top spot in the model table, ahead of Ford’s Focus and Fiesta.
