The fleet market staged something of a resurrection last month, with registrations up 25.3%, compared with June 2009, to 100,250 units with Vauxhall dominating both manufacturer and model sales charts.

The overall market was 10.8% up, and with private sales suffering from the end of the scrappage scheme it was fleet that returned to its dominant position, as confidence across both company cars and the rental market drove the sector to a 51.3% share of new car registrations.

It was a spectacular month for Vauxhall, grabbing top spot from Ford by a huge margin – 22,018 registrations against 13,379 from Ford. VW was again in third, ahead of BMW and Peugeot. Ford and Mercedes were the only brands in the top 10 not to increase registrations on June 2009.

Ford claims it had a deliberate policy last month of capping short-cycle rental volume to protect RVs and the “integrity of its business.”

The Vauxhall Astra topped the fleet models table with 8477 registrations, with its Corsa little brother second on 6032 registrations in June. Ford’s Focus and Fiesta were third and fourth, with The Nissan Qashqai continuing to grow in popularity with fifth spot, more than doubling its June 2009 volume.

There was also a big rise across fleet and retail in registrations of alternatively fuelled vehicles, which took a largest ever market share of 1.2%.
