EV battery recycling has become a critical area for ongoing investment and development in the automotive industry, according to GlobalData.

The data and analytics company said that lifecycle management for EV batteries was providing both opportunities and challenges, with rising EV adoption significantly increased demand for efficient battery recycling processes.

It said recycling methods including hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, and direct recycling were being explored to recover valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, and manganese, with hydrometallurgical recycling having emerged as the most effective method, demonstrating a notable positive environmental impact.

The developments were said to come amid new regulations around battery disposal and recycling being implemented by the EU and several US states.

GlobalData automotive analyst Madhuchhanda Palit said: “The journey towards a sustainable future for EVs hinges on the effective management of battery lifecycles. As the automotive industry embraces recycling as a core component of its strategy, the potential for growth and innovation is significant.

“While challenges remain, the advancements in recycling technologies and the increasing emphasis on sustainability present a promising outlook for the automotive market.

“As stakeholders navigate this evolving landscape, the commitment to sustainable practices will not only mitigate environmental hazards but also drive market growth in the years to come.”
