Chrysler’s new Sebring will be joined by a Dodge saloon counterpart from the middle of 2007 with both the US-branded fleet contenders using the 2.0-litre VW-sourced diesel.

While Thomas Hausch, Chrysler Group’s head of sales and marketing, admitted there will be a “very different Dodge stablemate” for the Sebring he would not provide details.

Company sources said the Dodge saloon, larger than Ford’s Mondeo, will be more aggressive, masculine and sporting than the Chrysler. It will make its public debut in concept car form at the September Paris motor show.

The Dodge is believed to draw inspiration from the latter day Charger muscle car, and will also use 2.0- and 2.4-litre petrols.

Prices for both cars will range from between £17,000 to £19,000 and Hausch claimed: “Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep are the only real global American brands. Dodges provide a lot of space and horsepower for the money.”

The Sebring range is also expected to expand to include both a convertible and coupe/convertible.
