Fleets can’t just rely on installing telematics packages to improve fleet safety according to two speakers at this month’s BVRLA technology conference.

Both Andy Price from insurer Zurich and Andrew Brown-Allan from Carrot Insurance told fleet managers that telematics needs to work in conjunction with incentives for drivers.

Price said that because the driver does not have to pay for the insurance there is no reason for him or her to modify their behaviour. He also pointed out that even with the higher mileage of business drivers taken into account, accident rates are greater for business journeys.

Brown-Allan suggested ‘gamification’ of any telematics information as a way to get driver involvement in improving their behaviour. He defined gamification as turning telematics data into a game-like scenario with scores and rewards.
