The Government has confirmed a budget of up to £250m for a new lorry park in Kent, aiming to head-off any repeat of the chaos caused when the M20 was closed due to Operation Stack in the summer.

When French workers went on strike, cross channel freight traffic was parked on the motorway, causing gridlock and travel problems for the south-east corner of the country, and the Government has confirmed that it will “consult on a preferred site at Stanford and other alternatives shortly”.

“Great to hear Govt has committed £250m to fund a long-term solution for OpStack – now let’s get on with building it!” Natalie Chapman, head of policy for London, South East and East of England at Freight Transport Association tweeted.
