Audi claims it has set a speed record for a self-driving after an unmanned version of its RS7 hit 149mph around the Hockenheim circuit in Germany.

The German car maker’s demonstration took place during the DTM (German touring car) weekend. The company said the stunt was designed to highlight its efforts to bring piloted driving to road cars.

The RS7 was fitted with cameras, laser scanners, GPS location data, radio transmissions and radar sensors to take itself around the circuit. The data was crunched by computing equipment that filled its boot.

A human was also put behind the wheel of the car for a comparison lap and was five seconds slower than the unmanned vehicle.
