We always felt the last 5008’s design was comprised by the addition of a couple of rear seats. This time around, we feel the changes compared with the E-3008 are far better executed – with the same high beltline and pronounced rear haunches.

Unlike the E-3008, which has fastback styling meaning the tallest passengers’ heads are brushing the headlining, the E-5008’s standard roofline won’t upset rear passengers. In fact, choose the optional sunroof, and passengers will still be fine!

Interior tech

Like the E-3008, the E-5008 features the latest version of its still controversial i-Cockpit, which includes the floating, curved 21in panoramic screen – combining the head-up display with the central touchscreen. This bothers less, as the height of the screen is almost right for the tallest drivers, but the bottom of the screen is still obscured by the latest small multifunction steering wheel.

Following the look and feel of the new E-3008, this car follows the style of the last 3008, with its curvy and driver-focussed design. The dashboard and tall centre console are fabric trimmed like the last, with metal detailing. It is also ambiently lit with colours according to the driving mode.

The cleverest part of the dashboard, in our opinion, is the central area, where you’ll find the customisable i-Toggles. These touch-sensitive buttons can be programmed to give shortcuts to 10 of the driver’s favourite car functions. They work well and help with the interaction with the standard infotainment – which is generally easy to use and mirrors what is fitted across the Stellantis family.

Along with the headroom, there is plenty of legroom in the second row, it’s higher too – giving a commanding view. In the third row, the E-5008 still impresses, with its access, and enough head and legroom for children or adults up to 6ft tall – although the third row is disappointingly free of useful features such as air-conditioning controls and charging ports.  With all seats in place, there’s still a reasonable 348-litre boot. The third row is easily folded, taking boot space to 916 litres, which is more than seven-seater rivals.

Performance and drive

Like the E-3008, the E-5008 gets Stellantis’ new STLA (Stella) medium electric platform, which is scalable and can support mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full EV drivetrains. With the 400V lithium-ion battery living under the floor, in E-5008 versions. The single motor BEV and mild hybrid versions of the new E-3008 hit the UK this month, with the 320hp dual motor EV, 230hp long range EV, and the plug-in hybrid versions following later.

We drove the single motor E-5008 with the GT equipment grade, which is expected to be the fleet best-seller. It boasts 210hp, and has a 73kWh battery, equalling a quoted 311-mile range. Despite this performance and range, acceleration to 62mph takes a leisurely 9.7 seconds. The extra seats add weight to Peugeot’s new architecture – at 2.2 tonnes it is even heavier than the E-3008, and probably the reason why it’s even slower than its five-seater sister. We didn’t get a chance to test its efficiency, but a heat pump remains a £700 option which we still think is an oversight. DC charging is rated at 160kW, equalling a 20-80% charge in 30 minutes – so Peugeot says.

The E-5008 features an impressively resolved ride – even on the GT’s standard 20in wheels.  The steering continues to have little feedback, but it’s the comfort that is the standout feature of the drive. We also tried the mild hybrid version, and were impressed how smooth and refined this Peugeot was. Especially, as it is fitted with the 1.2-litre petrol engine. Although, the jury is still out as to how capable both 5008 versions would be with all seven seats filled and occupants’ luggage.

The new E-5008 looks great inside and out, and impresses with its practicality, but whichever spec level you go for, it’s a costly option.

Positive: Attractive styling inside and out, seven-seat practicality, high quality feel, easy and refined to drive.

Negative: Expensive, heavy, heat pump not standard.

Standard equipment: 19in alloy wheels, eco LED headlights, 3-claw signature front DRL driving lights, textile décor for the dashboard, door panels and control arch, e-Toggle compact gear selector, LED interior lighting, Dynamic height-adjustable fabric and leather trimmed front seats.
