The core 105hp 1.6 diesel emits just under 100g/km, and if you want more efficiency there’s an 85g/km Bluemotion. Even the sporty 184hp GTD produces a modest 109g/km. All models get Bluetooth and DAB, while the Match spec, one up from entry-level, adds alloy wheels, auto lights and wipers, adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.
While the mainstream range offers everything a lower medium company car driver could want, VW also has electric and plug-in hybrids. Then there’s the Golf GTE, a petrol-electric plug-in with a 300-mile range.
There really is a Golf for everyone. And that’s one reason why it’s our Mainstream Lower Medium Car of the Year
