Best hybrid car: Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid impressed our judges with its high electric driving range, attracting just a 7% BIK company car tax rate and improving battery-only usability, as well as contributing to strong real-world running costs.

Best small car: Toyota Yaris

The new Yaris will impress fleet managers with its efficient hybrid powertrain and a comprehensive package of safety systems, while drivers will be won over by its stylish design and an enjoyable driving experience.

Best family car: Skoda Octavia

The Octavia remains a firm favourite with our judges in this category, as a highly-practical, well-priced workhorse that also offers strong equipment levels and attractive styling – an ideal package for the company car driver who also needs reliable family transport.

Best upper-medium car: Vauxhall Insignia

Recent improvements, including the addition of an impressively frugal new diesel engine option, have taken the Insignia to the top of the class in the eyes of our judges, building on its existing strengths of comfort, style, practicality, and extensive standard spec.

Best value car: MG5

With fleet electrification progressing faster, a good value offering in this sector has particular significance. The MG5 combines family car practicality with long-range battery capacity at a price that could open up EV motoring to a wider selection of business drivers than before.

Driver’s choice: BMW 128ti

BMW’s entry into the front-wheel drive hot hatch market has proved an instant success, offering impressive performance and a superbly entertaining driving experience, while still being civilised and practical enough for drivers’ everyday motoring needs.

Best premium car: BMW 3 Series

The 3 Series retains its crown in this category for another year running, with its combination of strong driver appeal with a comprehensive range of engines as well as low total cost of ownership figures continuing to impress the judges.

Best compact SUV: Ford Puma

Last year’s overall New Company Car of the Year has managed to retain honours in a sector which saw a very busy year for new model launches. The Puma is great to drive, comes with frugal mild-hybrid engines, and offers impressive practicality.

Best medium SUV: Hyundai Tucson

The new Tucson stands out on the road with its striking design and should also stand out for fleets with its range of electrified powertrains. Drivers should be impressed by its high-quality interior, innovative technical features, and large boot capacity.

Best premium medium SUV: BMW X1

The X1 impressed our judges again with its all-round performance, including reasonable company car tax rates across the range, strong build quality and impressive refinement, along with plenty of driver appeal.

Best premium large SUV: Land Rover Discovery Sport

The judges were impressed by the Discovery Sport’s combination of kerbside appeal and seven-seater practicality, while also offering strong residual values, a recently improved infotainment system, and electrified powertrains which help to control fuel bills.

Highly commended: BMW X5

Best executive car: BMW 5 Series

In the words of one of our judges, ‘the best just got better’. A recent facelift brought improvements, including new-look styling and an infotainment upgrade, which proved enough for the 5 Series to retain the edge in this always-competitive category.

One to watch: Hyundai Ioniq 5

The first in a new line of electric cars from Hyundai, the Ioniq 5 makes a major statement and is set to put the brand toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names on the marketplace, including already established premium brands.

Green fleet manufacturer: Toyota/Lexus

 

Our judges felt Toyota/Lexus had the best all-round approach to environmental friendliness of the contenders in this category. They were particularly impressed by the company’s green manufacturing initiative, as well as its extensive range of hybrid vehicles.

Most improved manufacturer: Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover has improved its fleet business offering to support its growing range of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, including an expanded Fleet & Business Centre network and improved collaboration with RV setters and risk managers. True fleet sales were up almost 30% in the first half of 2021.

Leasing company of the year (over 25,000 vehicles): Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions

Hitachi stands out as an excellent leasing company to do business with, as its total package of services is designed to help businesses reduce mobility costs and achieve optimal asset utilisation. Contract HireFlex and digital fleet calculator products are among its notable initiatives.

Leasing company of the year (under 25,000 vehicles): Ogilvie Fleet

Ogilvie Fleet boasts a customer retention rate of 99.3%, as well as an increase in the size of its fleet driven mainly by referrals from existing clients. The company also impressed our judges with its useful management tools and by proactively offering Covid-19 payment holidays.

Green initiative award: Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions

The judges were impressed by Hitachi’s Intelligent Fleet Decarbonisation programme, a turnkey offering through which it can manage the entire process of customers’ electric transitions, and by its EV Academy, which ensures its staff are fully up-to-date when advising fleets.

Customer service award: The AA Business Services

Customer service is a clear strength of The AA. A 100% retention rate and an impressive roll call of new business wins in the past 12 months is just reward for a successful partnership-based approach, including many pandemic-related initiatives, which attracted strong testimonials from clients.

Remarketing award: BCA Remarketing

BCA navigated its Covid-19-related online sales shift with great success, with numerous enhancements to its digital products helping to deliver vital insights and support for vendors and buyers, along with impressive new fleet contract wins.

Rental company of the year: Enterprise

Enterprise won praise from the judges for a comprehensive corporate rental offering with a wide range of initiatives, such as car clubs, a Mobility-as-a-Service platform, and a large selection of environmentally friendly fleet options. Its strong customer testimonials also impressed.

Risk management award: eDriving

eDriving impressed the judges with its proven track record of reducing fleet risk, cutting collision rates in some fleets by up to 67%, with its Mentor app providing coaching to drivers after every trip based on telematics data from their smartphones, and alerting managers to high-risk employees.

Editor’s choice: Octopus Electric Vehicles

Salary sacrifice schemes make choosing an EV as a company car a no brainer. Octopus Electric Vehicles have delivered a scheme that makes it easy for companies to set and run. Plus, they also help employees choose cars, then learn about energy tariffs and smart charging points.

Best telematics product: VisionTrack

The judges were impressed by VisionTrack’s Autonomise.ai platform, which uses AI analysis of telematics data with camera footage to provide fleet managers with information to act on and improve road safety and driver performance.

Best fleet management software product: Nexus Vehicle Rental

The Nexus IRIS platform provides a full management facility for vehicle rentals, including bookings and billings, which has won favour with many major players in the fleet market. Recent helpful additions include a dedicated EV booking tool.

Best fleet service software product: Engineius

Engineius impressed our judges by offering a one-stop shop for booking, tracking and managing vehicle movements, with easy reporting tools, a reduced admin burden for customers, and a clear focus on appealing to the fleet market.

Innovation award: The AA Business Services

The AA’s freewheeling hub is a clever solution to the complex problem of recovering EVs from the roadside. This solution means that EVs can be towed easily behind a van, allowing them to get back on the road faster and sparing fleets a downtime headache.

Safety award: eDriving

eDriving won praise in this category for the way its Mentor app provides direct safe driving feedback to drivers via their smartphones, while new features include a coaching toolkit for managers and flexible scoring options tailored for different types of staff.

Lorna impressed our judges with a proactive approach to running her fleet, including a clear focus on whole-life costs – delivering savings on fuel and National Insurance contributions – and the addition of improved driver risk monitoring to the organisation’s expenses claims process.

Fleet supplier of the year: FMG

Accident management company FMG offers a comprehensive service to fleets, handling over 160,000 accident claims and over 70,000 repairs per year, and has a successful record reducing downtime, recovering costs from uninsured drivers and limiting third-party claim losses. The judges were also impressed by strong customer testimonials.

Green fleet of the year: National Grid

Lorna McAtear, our fleet manager of the year, has rolled out an impressive range of green initiatives with her fleet, including switching perk company cars to an EV-only policy, as part of a commitment to have a net-zero fleet by 2030.

Fleet manufacturer of the year: BMW

The judges were impressed by how BMW continues to build on its strong fleet market record with a wide range of initiatives, including programmes to support company car drivers with useful information both during the delivery process, and once their car has arrived.
