Which car rental company provides the best service? We acted as a potential business car customer and discovered that while some firms were excellent, several left a lot to be desired. Tom Webster reports
10. Apex 32%
Apex scored poorly in all areas other than services offered, and was not helped by the fact that it has no hybrids on the books.
9. 1Car1 36%
No hybrids, carbon-offsetting or city cars – all contribute to a low score in every category for 1Car1.
8. Thrifty 44%
In the absence of a specific carbon-offsetting scheme, Thrifty is aiming to cut emissions by positioning dealerships in areas of greatest demand.
=6. Hertz 52%
In the absence of a specific carbon-offsetting scheme, Thrifty is aiming to cut emissions by positioning dealerships in areas of greatest demand.
=6. Sixt 52%
With self-management available from the fourth quarter of 2008, Sixt could be much higher up the table this time next year.
5. Avis 72%
With five cars offered in the sub-121g/km category everything looked promising. What a shame no-one responded to our online enquiry.
4. Europcar 76%
Automated email response was the quickest of all, taking just 10 minutes. However, after promising personal contact from a company rep, none came.
3. Budget 80%
A good all-round score. Allows driver reports to be tailored to individual needs and has a dedicated small business department called Business Connections.
2. National 84%
While there is no carbon offsetting being offered at National at the moment, plans are afoot to bring in a scheme.
1. Enterprise 92%
Email response was good with an auto reply, personal message and follow-up email which was nearly perfect – full marks would have been gained if it had been perfect.
