Peugeot is a brand with a clear focus on electrification, as shown by its commitment to offer an electrified version of every model in its range by 2023. It’s perhaps no surprise, therefore, that it should produce an award-winning electric car, and that’s what it has in the shape of the e-2008, which took the Best Electric Car prize at this year’s Business Car Awards.
Peugeot’s strategy is based around a ‘choose your Peugeot, choose your powertrain’ approach to development. Rather than developing different platforms for electric and petrol or diesel cars, models are designed to accommodate all potential powertrains. The advantages of this can be seen with the e-2008 – with the battery accommodated under the floor, there is no compromise to be made with the boot or interior space, meaning drivers get all the practicality you would expect from the model’s SUV design.
The battery itself is a 50kWh unit, which powers a 136hp electric motor. The model is capable of covering up to 206 miles on a single charge in official WLTP testing, while an 80% battery charge can be completed in just 30 minutes using a 100kW rapid charger. Alternatively, a full battery charge using a 7kW fast charger will take 7.5 hours. The battery comes with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, for extra peace of mind.
Drivers can take control of charging remotely using the MyPeugeot app, which allows them to monitor, start, stop and programme charging remotely, as well as preset the heating and
air conditioning.
On the road, there’s the option to help keep the battery topped up with two regenerative braking energy recovery modes. The start-up default regenerative mode will feel similar to driving a standard diesel or petrol model, with similar levels of engine braking, while ‘B-mode’ provides more pronounced regenerative braking when lifting off
the accelerator.
Thanks to the shared platform approach, the e-2008 is available with many of the eye-catching features also seen with the regular 2008 range. These include the latest version of the Peugeot 3D i-Cockpit®, featuring a compact steering wheel, and a new 3D head-up display that features information projected in hologram form close to the driver’s eye line, helping to improve reaction times.
The e-2008 is also available with a range of impressive safety systems. This includes Drive Assist Plus, comprising adaptive cruise control with stop and go and lane positioning assist.
Groupe PSA UK fleet director Martin Gurney said: “An increasing number of business fleets and company car users are going electric. The financial benefits, from significantly lower BIK payments to reduced ‘fuel’ costs, are clear to see.
“Models like the Peugeot e-2008 now achieve more than 200 miles from a single charge, and can receive an 80% charge in under 30 minutes – making them more than capable of meeting the needs of an increasing number of business and private users.
“With more choice in the market than ever, winning Best Electric Car at the Business Car Awards was a huge achievement and recognises the exceptional qualities the e-2008 has when compared with its rivals.”
