What’s new: BusinessCar’s car of the year can now be had as a high-performance diesel. The 125d is fitted with a 218hp version of the firm’s 2.0-litre diesel engine, rendering it good for 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds.
Excellent: Yes, it’s a diesel, but performance is sensational – the in-gear acceleration is amazing. The standard 1-series is renowned for its sharp handling and this version is no exception.
Good: The 125d can’t match the headline figures of the 116d Efficient Dynamics (99g/km and 74.3mpg), but given the performance it’s very clean and frugal. Expect 58.9mpg and 126g/km from the eight-speed automatic version tested here.
Average: The ride is still a little firm in comparison to that of more comfortable premium lower medium rivals such as the Audi A3 and the Volvo V40.
Poor: A P11D of £29,255 seems a lot for a lower medium model, plus you’re looking at 62.8ppm.
Verdict: Save for anything with an M-powered engine, this is arguably the most desirable 1-series. It combines serious performance with low running costs – it’s just a shame it isn’t a bit cheaper.
