Mercedes is looking to build a following for its AMG brand that matches that enjoyed by the BMW M cars and Audi‘s RS models. More importantly, it wants to cash in on its halo product by encouraging drivers into new AMG Sport trim levels of standard C-class cars, as BMW and Audi have successfully done with the M-sport and S-line respectively.
From the moment the engine snarls into life it’s obvious that the C63 AMG Coupe is no ordinary C-class, and the 457hp 6.2-litre engine is as insanely rapid and aurally above anything offered by BMW’s M3 or the Audi RS5. Obviously, the maximum 35% tax band awaits, as does a huge fuel bill thanks to an admittedly achievable 23.5mpg official figure.
Cars this desirable are never going to be affordable to run, but the C63 AMG does a great job of making the AMG branding something desirable enough to filter down the range.
