Like many cars, our i40 has an electric handbrake, engaged at the flick of a switch, that releases automatically when you drive away. It’s a move that tidies up the centre of the cabin, as there’s no need for a big lever in the middle of it.
The only problem is that, as a safety measure, it doesn’t disengage as normal if the driver isn’t wearing their seatbelt. Sensible, you might think, but there are times when that failsafe is actually a pain, and you forget it won’t disengage as you try to pull away – like when one driver hops out to open the gate at the end of his driveway, and then doesn’t bother putting his seatbelt back on.
