Driving a saloon with a lovely large and deep boot recently has made me think the Countryman’s upright boot could work better if it had a bit more functionality.

The ‘flat load floor’ option at £155 (standard on the four-seat model) is a good start, creating a flat loading area when the seats are folded and offering a secret compartment underneath. But, given the vertical rather than horizontal nature of the space, a variable-height floor divider to partition fragile luggage from other objects above, like some clever compact MPVs do, might be handy.
