Hyundai is upping its emissions game, offering an i20 with just 98g/km of CO2. Based on the current i20 Comfort trim mated to a 1.4 CRDI 90hp engine, the i20 Blue uses the likes of stop/start and low rolling-resistance tyres to achieve an improvement of 12g/km and 9.1mpg (at 76.4mpg) over the non-eco equivalent.
A price of £13,195 not only means free road tax, but from next April the car will continue to be on the right side of the BIK tax band changes.
The i20 Blue is a pleasant enough drive although not outstanding, and the interior features slightly cheap plastics.
It is almost £2k cheaper than the Ford Fiesta Econetic 1.6 TDCI Zetec (£15,190), although the latter has better RVs at 31.6% versus 28.0% and better CO2 at 95g/km, although this figure is in the same benefit-in-kind band. But overall the i20 Blue has better whole-life costs at 35.1ppm against the Ford’s 35.5ppm.
