Renault has improved the efficiency on what was already the most efficient car in its range.
The 88hp 1.5 dCi Eco now drops to 94g/km and an official 78.4mpg, compared with 106g/km and 70.6mpg on the standard Expression model, which is £250 cheaper but less efficient.
The diesel engine is perky but a bit noisy, while the interior quality is below the standard of the smaller Twingo, although next year’s replacement Clio is promised to be a big step forward in that regard.
To drive, the Clio is standard fare for the class, but not outstanding in any particular area. There are more impressive superminis on the market.
The list price isn’t too bad for a diesel supermini, and kit levels are in line with the price, with alloy wheels, aircon and ESP anti-skid control all optional extras. As an honest, efficient, get-what-you-pay-for vehicle, it ticks a box, and will be in the lowest BIK band until April 2014.
