The road safety charity Brake is urging fleets to ensure drivers of company vehicles take regular eyesight tests.
Through membership of its Fleet Safety Forum division, Brake said fleet managers could order for free its Look Sharp poster and e-guidance campaign pack, sponsored by Boots Opticians.
The poster aims to help fleet managers convince drivers of the importance of having two-yearly eye tests to spot hazards on the road and the e-guidance package details the extent and nature of sight problems and provides advice on how to prevent them occurring.
Brake said every year in the UK 12.5 million people failed to have an eye test when due one and added that one in six drivers did not have good enough eyesight to pass the basic eyesight test.
Brake marketing manager Caroline Perry said: “Eyesight needs to be tested regularly throughout a driver’s lifetime. Fleet managers must address the issue internally and consider their drivers’ eyesight as part of fleet safety strategy. Being an experienced and skilled driver is meaningless if a driver is unable to spot hazards due to poor vision.”
