The chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders has said that the new EU175g/km average CO2 targets for vans are a “tough set of targets”.
“I think it was quite a difficult set of negotiations with the commission to reach what is a tough but achievable target, and there was lobbying for a harder target,” SMMT boss Paul Everitt told BusinessCar‘s sister title What Van?.
“We’re in the situation where there must be a lot of activity in order to achieve the average, we’ll see the introduction of new powertrains – while they might not take a huge part of the market they will be an important part of the mix in particular in the longer term,”
LCV manufacturers will be fined per vehicle for every g/km they are over the average 175g/km target from 2014, with a graduated ramp-up to 2017.
