Hyundai is aiming to exploit the gap in the market left by the old diesel-powered Skoda Fabia vRS model by launching a sporty looking but efficient version of the 120 supermini.
The i20 Sport model will have a trio of engines – including 1.2 and 1.4 petrol units – but the one the firm sees as the biggest opportunity is the 128hp 1.6 diesel, which will come with emissions of 119g/km next summer.
“It’s a niche left open by the new Fabia vRS being a petrol model,” said a spokesman.
