What’s new
Mercedes boulevard cruiser receives 268PS from SLK sibling and a new seven-speed automatic gearbox, along with mild facelift.
Excellent
The SL350 is a classy piece of kit, both in terms of looks and ability. Have it de-badged and people will think you’ve managed to bag a £100,000 car.
Good
Surprisingly the SL350 has the best handling in the SL-range, thanks to Mercedes ditching air suspension for a sharper ‘regular’ coil springs set-up.
Average
There is a trade-off in ride for handling. Satnav frustrates, looks dated and can be tricky to use.
Poor
Massive P11D, gearbox occasionally jerky in slow traffic, and, though it’s not Merc-specific, spacesaver spare can be a problem when you have to limp 80 motorway miles at 50mph!
Verdict
P11D and a ppm of 86.3ppm rule out SL for all but solar seeking md, new Jag XK coupe might be wiser investment.
