Mitsubishi‘s Lancer finally allows the Japanese brand, famed for its rally-style cars, to compete in the everyday hatchback market.
Thankfully the design team wasn’t reined in while sketching the Lancer Sportback, and the aggressive front nose and oversized rear spoiler make for an imposing and attractive car.
Sadly it is found wanting when sitting inside. A large panel behind the rear window makes visibility tricky for parking or blind spot checking on the motorway. The interior is also let down by a cheap feel to the materials
But the biggest let down for the Lancer is the engine. It feels clattery and noisy, and emits a very uncompetitive 173g/km CO2. The bare minimum required to compete with the front-runners in the segment is a sub 160g/km rating to comply with new capital allowance regulations.
An engine re-jig is needed before the Lancer Sportback can really mount a challenge.
