BYD has given the Atto 2, its new electric compact SUV, its European debut.

The new model, which slots in below the Atto 3 in BYD’s line-up, measures 4,310mm long, 1,830mm wide and 1,675mm tall. A 2,620mm wheelbase is designed to improve cabin space and help provide an SUV profile, and there’s a 400-litre boot.

Features of the Atto 2’s design include low side cladding, intended to make the car look taller, and a ‘floating’ roofline.

The model, which has debuted in Europe at the Brussels Motor Show, is built on BYD’s familiar e-Platform 3.0, with ‘Blade Battery’ technology.

A cell-to-body production process – said to be a first for the segment – integrates the battery completely into the vehicle chassis, with the top cover of the pack acting as the floor for the passenger compartment – an arrangement said to improve packaging and body rigidity.

At launch, the Atto 2 will be available with a 177hp electric motor, and a 45.1kWh battery, providing a WLTP combined range between charges of 194 miles. A version with a larger battery, offering a longer range, will join the line-up subsequently.

The full European launch of the Atto 2 is scheduled for February. UK specs and prices are yet to be announced.
