Large capacity-engined upper medium cars have always held the smallest share of the fleet market, but they’ve also had some of the loyalist followings. The most powerful Mondeo, propelled by a 220PS 2.5-litre turbo petrol engine in estate form, is no exception.

In reality its main fleet application is going to be with the police, and it will be a happy traffic officer who gets to use one every day. Ford has worked hard to make the quickest, largest Mondeo as fleet-friendly as possible.

In top spec Titanium X form the car costs £24,139, and the cost per mile comes in at a not insignificant 44.1p. However, Ford has achieved a combined fuel figure above 30mpg (just). And more significantly the 222g/km CO2 figure is band F for VED, narrowly missing out on the new £400 tax level due next April.

On top of this the car is a joy to drive, having the Mondeo’s acclaimed ride and handling combination as well as plenty of go.

Verdict: The Ford Mondeo is great car, but with this one you’ll be paying for the privilege.
