With an increasing demand for power in the small van market Ford has added a new 110PS 1.8-litre diesel to the Connect range.
The driving experience has always been one of the Connect’s strengths and the addition of a more powerful diesel (there’s also a 75PS and a 90PS diesel) makes it even more appealing.
It’s nippy and can now cope more ably with heavier loads, although you might want to go for the Traction Assist option for £100 that also adds rear disc brakes – normally the rear would be fitted with less powerful drum brakes.
But it’s costs that will be the main player in a decision to buy. According to Topcalc the T230 LX in LWB and high-roof layout will cost 17.5p per mile. Fuel figures aren’t available yet, but sister magazine What Van? achieved 40mpg in its real-world test.
The Connect is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox and while it’s slick and easy to use, a six-speed would not only improve fuel consumption, but it could also help lower engine noise – particularly at motorway speeds.
Verdict: The best driving van in its sector just got better.
