What’s new: Skoda has launched a new Fabia, the model that originally put the Czech company on the mainstream map. We tried the most basic model, the 60PS 1.2-litre in trim level 1.
Excellent: The very low P11D and a CPM of 18.5p doesn’t mean sacrificing quality. It’s a lot of car for the cash, especially as it’s only available as a five-door.
Good: The new Fabia’s interior quality is impressive – the cabin materials and fittings belie the little car’s entry-level status. It’s also sprightly enough, considering the low power output, and ride quality and interior space are good.
Average: The styling, though more grown-up, has lost some of the predecessor’s good looks. Picking the right colour is vital with the new model.
Poor: There’s an irritating vibration from the three-cylinder engine at idle. And because of the entry-level trim, aircon, alloys and metallic paint will mean a trip to the options list.
Verdict: A budget car that charmed the BusinessCar office. It’s also practical and easy to live with.
