The Defender 90, the short-wheelbase version of Land Rover’s reborn off-roader, is now available to order from £40,290 for the basic 2.0-litre diesel.

The five-door version of the Defender went on sale earlier, for £45,240, and Land Rover says that orders for that car have exceeded initial targets. A commercial version of the 90 will go on sale later this year, for £35,000 (excluding VAT, as it’s a commercial vehicle).

The Defender is Land Rover’s iconic off-roader, which has been reinvented as a more lifestyle-oriented vehicle that offers modern refinement on the road, as well as off-road capability.

The Defender is currently available with a choice of four powertrains: a 2.0-litre diesel with 200 or 240hp, a 2.0-litre petrol with 300hp, or a 3.0-litre petrol with 400hp. An automatic gearbox with four-wheel drive is the only transmission choice.
