The money markets and other area industry might be experiencing some volatility ahead of the EU Referendum, but Ford’s performance in the UK new car market has remained strong.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Ka+, Roelant de Waard, vice president marketing, sales and service, Ford of Europe, said he was “positively surprised that the Brexit discussions hadn’t had any negative impact [on car sales]” and doesn’t expect that situation to change after 23rd June.

“The UK went into recession early, so it makes sense that it should recover early,” continued de Waard. “I expect many healthy years in the UK, especially with the model lineup that we have.”

Helping the fleet market, he believed, was the availability of an alternative to the petrol-powered Focus ST. “The diesel ST has doubled overall ST models,” revealed de Waard. “Drivers are emotional people and they want this kind of car, and the diesel is more appealing and affordable to fleet buyers. It has also woken up the diesel markets in France, Italy and Spain.”
