Our Audi A4’s fuel consumption continues to average over 50mpg, which is making for regular runs of more than 500 miles between tanks, with me generally running the car on the Economy setting, as there doesn’t seem to be much of a performance penalty.

That’s helped by the generally efficient stop-start system that, like some other modern versions, will actually cut out before the vehicle comes to a standstill.

Simply coast up to a red light, and the engine will stop running while the car is still a couple of miles an hour from a standstill. It’s a marginal gain admittedly, but they all count.
