The RAC’s business wing provides services including breakdown and accident management, fuel cards and motor insurance, along with telematics, and wins this title ahead of our 2015 winner Teletrac.

The firm sells its telematics service on the ability of fleet managers to track their vehicles 24/7, and monitor driver performance and fuel spend on devices from desktop machines to smartphones.

The system provides information on users’ acceleration and braking habits – and so helps reduce wear and tear-related vehicle costs – and records whether users stick to speed limits, helping fleet managers to encourage safer driving.

Other functions include 92% accuracy crash detection. This works at speeds down to 5mph – crashes which are typically much harder to detect – and ensures the safety of drivers and a faster turnaround, in the event that a vehicle has been damaged. The system also allows fleet managers to investigate details of any incident to help establish which party may be at fault, and accelerate any insurance claims.

Showing the company’s faith in the technology, all of its 1500 patrol vehicles are fitted with RAC telematics kit.
