Previously only available as a thirstier and dirtier four-wheel drive model, the 1.4-litre petrol Mokka can now be had as a front-wheel drive variant with lower emissions and better economy.
Excellent
As non-premium petrol cars go, the Mokka’s RVs are tidy at 37.2%. It also musters 47.1mpg and 139g/km, and sits in the 19% BIK bracket – far better than the four-wheel drive version.
Good
It may be small but the 140hp turbocharged engine is potent and more powerful than that of most direct rivals. You’re looking at 117hp from the nearest Nissan Juke and 120hp from an equivalent Peugeot 2008.
Average
The interior is a little drab and the position of the handbrake and centre armrest mean it can be uncomfortable when changing gear or parking.
Poor
Desirability matters in this segment and, next to Nissan’s Juke and Qashqai, which it sits between size-wise, the Mokka is beige to drive and look at.
Verdict
The engine and the subsequent figures do the Mokka proud, but good luck getting drivers to choose it over more appealing crossovers.
