Parking enforcement using CCTV ‘spy cars’ will be made illegal, communities secretary Eric Pickles and transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin have announced.

The unpopular ‘parking ticket-in the post’ has been a constant administrative headache for fleet managers, especially those who run a large number of pool cars or daily rental vehicles.

The ban, made law by the Deregulation Bill, follows a three-month consultation that will effectively force local council parking wardens to fix a ticket to the windscreen for a successful prosecution.

Unfortunately for busy fleet managers, CCTV enforcement will live on, but only on critical routes such as bus lanes or school zones
