More than half of all motorists breaking down on motorways are risking death or serious injury by remaining with their vehicle on the hard shoulder, according to research from the AA.
One in three would stay inside their vehicle while a further 23% would get out but remain nearby on the hard shoulder.
And business drivers are most guilty.
“Company car drivers are among the worst offenders, either because they haven’t been given advice about what to do, or because it isn’t their vehicle and they haven’t considered what to do if they break down,” said Roger Williams, head of major fleets and leasing at AA Business Services.
“Ignoring hard shoulder breakdown advice is without doubt the worst and most dangerous thing company car drivers can do,” continued Williams. “Staying in your car leaves you at risk of being involved in a collision with passing vehicles, but a frightening number of drivers take this gamble.”
Dave Macintyre, AA Patrol of the Year, added: “Many people choose to risk their own lives by staying in the car to do paperwork or make calls on their mobile phone.”
